Volleyball4Life zet voet aan de grond in Rwanda

Volleybal is meer dan sport, dat realiseert de Nevobo zich als geen ander. De sport vereist samenwerking, evenals het stellen van doelen, het maken van afspraken en het actief deelnemen vanuit je eigen rol. Deze elementen vertalen we met Volleyball4Life naar situaties buiten het veld en in het dagelijks leven. Zo draagt het Volleyball4Life-programma bij door onze mooie sport in te zetten voor de persoonlijke ontwikkeling van meiden en jongens. Dit doen we vanuit onze visie op Sportief én Maatschappelijk Goud.
Volleyball4Life loopt al in Senegal en Nepal, en met OlympAfrica als partner heeft het programma nu ook voet aan de grond gekregen in Rwanda. Van 26 juli tot en met 2 augustus 2023 was een Nederlandse delegatie namens de Nevobo in Rwanda om Volleyball4Life te implementeren. Samen met OlympAfrica heeft Nevobo 18 coaches opgeleid om jonge meiden en jongens waardevolle levensvaardigheden bij te brengen.
Partner OlympAfrica
We zijn verheugd dat onze partners zich hebben gecommitteerd aan dit initiatief, gedreven door de overtuiging dat we samen een verschil kunnen maken. Nevobo werkt samen met OlympAfrica aan de implementatie van het Volleyball4Life-programma in Afrika. OlympAfrica streeft ernaar om sportprogramma's en faciliteiten toegankelijk te maken in bijna alle landen in Afrika voor jongeren die onder lastige omstandigheden opgroeien. Tijdens de Coaches Course in Rwanda is de eerste Volleyball4Life-instructeur in Afrika opgeleid, wat bijdraagt aan een duurzame en lokale samenwerking. De instructeur, Jean Paul Mana, begeleidt de opgeleide coaches bij de uitvoering van het Volleyball4Life-activiteitenprogramma. Mana: ‘We are very proud of this program as we expect a change. Here in Rwanda, empowering girls through sports is something very important’. Onder de coaches bevonden zich ook vertegenwoordigers uit Tanzania, Mozambique en Lesotho, die werkzaam zijn in OlympAfrica Centres in hun respectievelijke landen en betrokken zullen zijn bij de uitrol van de Volleyball4Life-activiteiten.
Naast OlympAfrica waren er vertegenwoordigers aanwezig van FIVB Zone 5, de Nederlandse Ambassade in Rwanda, het NOC Rwanda en de burgemeester van Nyanza.
Volleybal als Maatschappelijk Goud
Het programma in Rwanda heeft weer eens bewezen dat hoewel volleybal wereldwijd de grootste teamsport voor vrouwen is, het toch aanvoelt als een hechte en betrokken familie. Bovendien is volleybal als non-contact sport laagdrempelig voor meiden om te spelen. Samen met de eerder genoemde specifieke kenmerken maakt dit onze sport uitermate geschikt voor het inzetten van maatschappelijke doeleinden. Het Volleyball4Life-programma richt zich op de persoonlijke ontwikkeling van jeugd, zowel internationaal als dichtbij huis in Nederland.
Volleyball4Life sets foot in Rwanda
Volleyball is more than a sport, the Nevobo realises this better than anyone else. The sport requires cooperation, as well as setting goals, making agreements and actively participating from your own role. We translate these elements with Volleyball4Life to situations off the court and in everyday life. In this way, the Volleyball4Life programme contributes by using our beautiful sport for personal development of girls and boys. We do this from our strategy ‘Sportive and Social Gold’.
Volleyball4Life is already running in Senegal and Nepal, and with OlympAfrica as partner, the programme has now also gained ground in Rwanda. From 26 July to 2 August 2023, a Dutch delegation on behalf of Nevobo was in Rwanda to implement Volleyball4Life. Together with OlympAfrica, Nevobo trained 18 coaches to teach young girls and boys valuable life skills.
Partner OlympAfrica
We are delighted that our partner has committed to this initiative, driven by the belief that together we can make a difference. Nevobo is working with OlympAfrica to implement the Volleyball4Life programme in Africa. OlympAfrica aims to make sports programmes and facilities accessible in almost all countries in Africa for young people growing up in difficult circumstances. During the Coaches Course in Rwanda, the first Volleyball4Life instructor in Africa was trained, contributing to sustainable and local cooperation. The instructor, Jean Paul Mana, guides the trained coaches in implementing the Volleyball4Life activities programme. Mana: 'We are very proud of this programme as we expect a change. Here in Rwanda, empowering girls through sports is something very important'. The coaches also included representatives from Tanzania, Mozambique and Lesotho, who are working in OlympAfrica Centres in their respective countries and will be involved in the roll-out of the Volleyball4Life activities.
Besides OlympAfrica, representatives were present from FIVB Zone 5, the Dutch Embassy in Rwanda, NOC Rwanda and the mayor of Nyanza.
Volleyball as Social Gold
The programme in Rwanda proved once again that even though volleyball is the biggest team sport for women worldwide, it still feels like a close and involved family. Moreover, as a non-contact sport, volleyball is low-threshold for girls to play. Together with the aforementioned specific characteristics, this makes our sport ideally suited for social causes. The Volleyball4Life programme focuses on the personal development of young people, both internationally and close to home in the Netherlands.
